Turbosquid - Poor Businees Pratice

Tue Aug 4, 2009, 8:46 AM
Turbosquid is about to implement a new program in an attempt to monopolize the 3d market and pretty much slap 3d artists in the face. The new program is called SquidGuild and it is just plain rubbish. In simplest terms, Turbosquid is black mailing 3d artists to accept a exclusive deal (You cannot sell your 3d content anywhere but on Turbosquid) or face a lowering of your royalty. Now, Turbosquid already has the lowest royalty percentage of any 3d marketplace to begin with (50 percent). If an artist does not sign an exclusive deal with Turbosquid his or her royalty rate will decrease to a dismal 40 percent. Now this is the real kicker, the exclusive deal does not gauruantee a 3d artist a 60 percent royalty rate. The exclusive royalty rate is actually tiered depending on how much sales you have generated. The lowest is 50 percent and it works its way up to 60 percent.

All in all, I am very displeased with the Turbosquid and I am forced to increase prices on Turbosquid to counter the royalty rate decrease. I would recommend any persons who purchased 3d content from Turbosquid to find an alternative 3d marketplace. The3dstudio and FallingPixel are both great alternatives that care about both their potential customers and 3d artists.

Below is a link to the rubbish that is SquidGuild

dude you got way to less views for your amazing 3d stuff. Your lightning and Rendering is very cool! I think you should do a Scene or something big were you can show you skills... than you would get a lot more attention (I sure ;-) )

Totally realistic stuff dude  Where did you learn your render setups?
:iconplutonius:
Tutorials, fooling around, and lots of time. The default 3ds max scanline renderer is a bear and just isn`t up to the task of producing realistic imagery, so I use Vray. I am sure other 3rd party renderers are just good (i.e. Brazil or Maxwell)

I do use the 3ds max renderer for clay untextured renders.

For the lighting setup, I pretty much just copied the setup of photographers plus I use a HDRI map. It does work quite well.

Vincent Malloy is seven years old
He’s always polite and does what he’s told
For a boy his age, he’s considerate and nice
But he wants to be just like Vincent Price.
